July Expirations: Let's Call It a Massacre

Well, this was unexpected. After June's list of more-than-could-be-processed expiring titles, it was natural to assume the bulk of the damage was done and we could go ahead and discuss July's new arrivals. But Netflix had other ideas. Perhaps trying to keep everyone from noticing exactly how many titles it's eliminating, the service saved a large chunk of its vanishing catalog for July 5—giving no prior notice until the last couple of days (the fact that it's July 4th weekend may also have been part of their plan, if you're conspiracy-minded).

Thanks to all the eagle-eyed readers out there who have been diligently posting their findings (and making my humble Expirations page look like a sub-Reddit forum!), we can gauge just how much will be gone as of Sunday at midnight. Granted, much of it is obscure genre fare and some is downright crappy, but there are also a few genuinely notable older titles—including the early John Boorman flick, Leo the Last (1970), and Jim McBride's seminal David Holzman's Diary (1967)—not to mention a whole slew of silents, many by that era's most distinguished filmmakers. There are too many for me to provide links, but here are all the silent films and pre-1982 titles (so far) that are viewable through July 5:

SILENTS
Anna Boleyn (1920)
The Beloved Rogue (1927)

Exhausted yet? I sure am. But that's still not all. There are also those titles already noted earlier, including a few that will be vanishing even sooner (although I won't be surprised if Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon reappears to help promote its Netflix-produced sequel):

July 4

Apologies for the rushed nature of this post, but I wanted to make this info available as soon as possible for anyone who won't be spending the weekend outside celebrating the 4th. And if seeing this many titles leaving so unexpectedly gets you angry [Edit: there are now many more below], then consider taking a few minutes to call Netflix and tell them you're mad as hell and aren't going to take it anymore (or some such thing). They're apparently very responsive to customer feedback, especially in large numbers, so it can only help. And while you've got them on the phone, tell them they better not discontinue labeling their expiring titles, which I hear they're considering—or else!

As mentioned earlier, from this point forward all further expiring titles for July should be noted in this page's comment section, as the Expiration page is now locked. Thanks again to everyone out there for sharing your lists with us. Let the mourning being...

  3. Thank you Linklisa and a big FU to Netflix. This really is beginning to look like a drastic change in direction for Instant, which I know some have been predicting. Soon all catalog titles will be purged. I just wish they wouldn't do so much of it on 7/5!

  5. Wow, Lisa, thanks for posting. That's just downright ridiculous. (Where are you finding all these?) I guess Netflix has to make room for all those...Adam Sandler movies. Ugh.

Thanks, also, LarryG. Those are definitely notable ones (especially if you're a Susan George fan).

  6. This passed ridiculous about 30 days ago...here are a few more Asian series that are expiring. I believe that all of the Asian titles expiring on 7/31 (at least for now) are all Taiwanese. I don't mean to be picky, but it might make a difference to someone. Anyway, here are 3 more:

    7/31

    Love Forward
    Channnel X
    Zhong Wu Yan

    I'm off to call Netflix!

    ReplyDelete
  7. 99% of those titles will still be available to stream on Amazon Prime after they expire on Netflix

  8. Grasshopper, thanks for the correction on the 7/31 Asian titles being Taiwanese.

So far the count is up to 128 for last day 7/5 from MaFt at http://usa.newonnetflix.info/lastchance
I've been trying to check those against what is already posted here for duplicates, but human error has probably crept in. That website has a nice display with posters, and usually doesn't list as many expiring titles as our group here does. I have the impression someone there has been scouring Netflix title lists all of their waking hours this weekend (thank you, whoever you are!!)

Here are more adds I've seen from MaFt since last night:

    7/5
    Aaltra (2004)
    The American Snitch (1983)
    And God Spoke (1993)
    Anytown, USA (2005)

    The Club (1980)
    Cracking Up (1977)
Crimson (Las ratas no duermen de noche) (1973)
    The Current (2014)
Dad on the Run (Cours Toujours) (2000)
    Double Take (2009)

I chatted with a Netflix customer support guy and they said that ending putting the cancel dates on our queues was being tested by the powers that be, but the feedback they have been getting is we are absolutely against it. How crappy would it be to just lose a show right in the middle of it? At least giving a 30 notice gives you some chance.

  34. 14-Jul What a Man (2011) 94 min

I went away for the July 4 weekend, and my queue was down a dozen titles when I returned. Looking at the carnage posted here, it was really cowardly & inconsiderate of Netflix to give only a couple of days notice on hundreds of titles.

Would it be of any use to try and create a groundswell for expiration dates on all titles? If it got renewed then the expiration date would change accordingly. It would certainly remove the need for us all to post on blogs such as this.

  46. @WEllesley72, I don't see a date for it at this point, so let's say it's safe until someone discovers otherwise. Taking it off the list...

  47. Okay, 11 titles have disappeared from my list without warning since yesterday, and I don't know which ones they were. Not cool.

  48. The Clairvoyant (1934)
    Sailing Along (1938)

Apparently these were dropped without notice.
I started watching Let 'em Have It yesterday but I something came up.... went to try again today..... GONE.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Okay, yeah, The Clairvoyant *was* something that had been on my list, so that accounts for one out of the 11.

Supposedly, according to NF customer service, the titles that disappeared without warning are "under maintenance" and will reappear when they're done working on them. I'll believe it when I see it.

    Cop Hater (58)

    Canon City (1948)

  57. My first queue that was at full capacity of 500 titles yesterday is at 488 today, and I had only a couple of Anonymous' titles in that queue. I don't keep a spreadsheet so I'll never know what other titles were yanked. I called customer service and she was clueless about why this is happening, but of course said she'd submit my complaint.

The purging of older catalog titles continues apace.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Lost over 20 titles in the past two days without any warning...no expiration dates listed. Like many, I don't keep a separate list of the titles in my queue. I just know how many I have in each queue. Very very disappointed. I have to say, I'm really considering dropping my Netflix subscription. Been a subscriber for years. But, they seem intent on making their customers unhappy. So sad.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Wait, they're still purging? That's disturbing.

Been doing some research on Netflix's DVD portion. Very hit or miss, but I found these:

Expiring on 8/1 (last day 7/31):
    Heartburn
    Hitch

    Coming 8/1:
    Benny and Joon
    Casting By
    Marvin's Room

  60. I know these titles have already been posted, but I wanted to point out that there seems to be a major exodus of titles from Kino Lorber taking place on Netflix this month. I've also seen some of their titles expire on Hulu this month.

These titles which suddenly disappeared in the last couple of days are all from Kino Lorber:

    Abraham Lincoln (1930)

    Siberian Lady Macbeth (1962)
They Made Me A Fugitive (1947)
This is Not a Movie (2011)
    Three Ages (1923)

And these titles which expired earlier this month are also from Kino Lorber:

These KL titles expired this month @ Hulu:

    Animals (2012, Spain)
    The Blue Angel (1930)
    Manuscripts Don’t Burn (2013)
Memphis (2013) - this one was only available at Hulu for a couple of months or so.

There are probably other titles that could've been included, but I only have so much patience in looking these things up. :-)

  61. It's seems clear that Kino Lorber's contract with Netflix came to an end, so it's all the more inexplicable that little or no notice was given before their titles disappeared. Maybe there were frantic negotiations going on until the very last minute? Or maybe Netflix just didn't want to draw attention to such a negative development.

    ReplyDelete
  62. @ will g. I'm sure we can look forward to seeing these movies. Interestingly, Kino Lorber also releases some contemporary titles in addition to their "oldies", including A girl Walk Home Alone at Midnight, which is streaming on Netflix although there may be a separate license for that film. Question about silent films: aren't a lot of these in the public domain, so why can't Netflix just buy a decent print. The only other cost should be the cost of streaming.

    ReplyDelete
  63. @ will g. I am sure we can look forward to seeing these films on Hulu. Kino Lorber also releases some contemporary movies like A Girl Walks Home Alone at Midnight, which is still streaming on Netflix (unless it was a stealth removal) although that may be under a separate license.

    141 removals on Tuesday July 14, 2015
    53 removals on Monday July 13, 2015

  74. on Monday the 13th, I awoke to find over one hundred titles in streaming cue marked as expiring 7/13 and 7/14. I starting moving them up to the top of my cue while watching Good-Time Girl. By the time I finished that British movie all titles for Monday and Tuesday expiration had vanished.

the Netflix customer service rep was not aware of any massacre or of the previous July 6 bloodbath, where I was able to watch 20 titles before they vanishe3d.

the latest bunch were silent, British titles from the 40s, 50s and 60s, mostly all black and white. Also American titles from the 1950s, mostly crime related and biker films from the 1960s.

  75. yep, i had 5 dolls for an august moon in my list, and it disappeared this week without ever having an expiration date listed. i should have known since it was kino video, but i had talked to a rep on the phone a few days ago, and she assured me netflix isn't removing titles without warning and dutifully passed along my feedback about my 3 kino lorber movies that did get removed after only 3 says warning instead of the customary week and ken burns' jazz, which got removed after mere hours of warning. she also took my feedback about the watch instantly and dvd sides not fully cross-referencing each other and not being able to add to the instant queue from the dvd side, promising it would be fixed very soon, but that hasn't happened yet either. you wouldn't guess this would be the company in the news today for its huge financial success, but it's pretty obvious we're not the customers they really care about. never mind that i've had a subscription continuously for 10 years.

Hustling (w/Jill Clayburgh and Lee Remick)

Meanwhile, in addition to many of those listed above, House of Exorcism and La Petite Lili were among the *141* titles that left on the 14th (according to usa.newonnetflix.info), while The Apple and Light Keeps Me Company were two of 53 expirations on the 13th.

The only silver lining: all of these are currently streaming on Amazon Prime, with currently no expiration date. I'm sure others from the lists above are, as well.

    L'Age d'Or 1930
    Otello 1986
    Casanova '70 1965
    Electra 1962

We got through the whole day yesterday with only two measly new titles, and I didn't find any new ones today. Yay. Hope this isn't the calm before the storm.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Will G,

David most certainly is transferring our submissions...almost my entire July 4th post was transferred. For some reason, however, even though "Man of Tai Chi" was part of that post it was not transferred. I realize David only includes "WoNN-recommended titles and those too big to ignore" but I'm surprised at the omission of "Man of Tai Chi" as it is a Keanu Reeves film and is considered to be a pretty decent martial arts movie by many people.

David also transferred my July 15th posting of "Driving Miss Daisy".

So, I can verify that as of at least several days ago David most definitely IS transferring submissions and I'm very appreciative of his work.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Brian, I don't see any of the titles you posted on 7/4 transferred to David's list. You list 22 titles expiring on 8/1 (which on this site is 7/31), he lists 7. Is my computer showing something different than whatever device you're using? LOL I'm confused.

  92. Will,

The main list is not on this page. It's where it's always been, on the "Expiring" page of this blog:

    http://whatsonnetflixnow.blogspot.com/p/expiring-soon.html

There you will see quite a number of titles listed under 7/31 (including most of what I posted on July 4 and my July 15 post).

    ReplyDelete
  98. Will,

If my memory is correct, expiration dates appear in your streaming queue (in red) at 10 AM CST.

    ReplyDelete
  99. @will g and @Brian T:
Apologies for any confusion. Yes, I am discontinuing the Expiring page, but consider this a one-month only transitional period. I assume all of the frequent commenters will be looking at this page for the latest departing titles; but newcomers and less active readers may still be going to the old page, so I decided to put everything I saw as notable this month on the Expiring page. (In other words, Will, you haven't missed anything.) Brian, apologies for neglecting MAN OF TAI CHI. I didn't realize it was a Keanu flick, thinking it was just another obscure martial arts title. I'll put it up there.

Meanwhile, has anyone else noticed something freaky going on with Netflix's queues? Mine are all gibberish this morning.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Queue is now back to normal. Weird...

    ReplyDelete
  101. David,

Do I understand correctly that in future months you'll continue to write new blog entries like this one, and when we post our submissions we'll do it on that month's blog entry? And will you include reader submissions at the top of that entry as you've done at the top of this one?

  103. New on Netflix USA listed another 31 removals today. I lost five unanounced today including one, Siegfried, Fritz Lang, that is not listed on his site.

I just wish Netflix would announce them. then I might have gotten a couple in over the weekend. I'm betting that tomorrow is going to be another bad day.

    ReplyDelete
  104. I lost 5 today without any expiration warning having been posted:

    Dr Mabuse, The Gambler (1922)
    Siegfried (1924)
    Intolerance (1916)
    Fantomas I (1913)
The Corsican Brothers (not sure, but I suspect it was the one from 1941)

And when I told customer service, the girl kept trying to tell me where the expiration warnings were posted, and it took several times telling her before she understood that I already know where to look, I have been looking there, and there was NOT any notice posted.

I think it's time for a Twitter storm of bad publicity about this.

    ReplyDelete
  105. @Pox -- Yes, The Corsican Brothers was 1941 with Douglas Fairbanks Jr

I lost 6 movies today with no prior notice. In addition to those titles already mentioned, these two were removed:
Night Train (1998) John Hurt, Brenda Blethyn
Merci Pour Le Chocolat (2000) Isabelle Huppert, Claude Chabrol dir

That makes 46 titles gone now per New on Netflix USA plus 5 more here.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Lost a few today including the previously mentioned Fritz Lang titles and:

Lisa and the Devil (Mario Bava)
99 River Street (a good low-budget film noir)

    Thanks again, Netflix.

  107. I'm hopelessly overwhelmed, and dangerously close to not caring anymore. So I'm opting to fight a battle I might have a shot at winning: As long as we're pleading our cases for expiring films that belong on the Recommended list, please consider the 2008 Japanese film, Departures. It won the Best Foreign Film Oscar, which I believe is even more prestigious than "stars Keanu." (Just teasing - love Keanu; love martial arts movies.) But Departures is lovely in many ways. Last day to watch is July 31.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I lost 15 more without ANY notice at all:

Let the Devil Wear Black (99)
Bad Day to Go Fishing (09)
    The Hillside Stranglers (89)
    Jennifer on my Mind (71)
    Double Down (01)
    Merci Pour le Chocolat (00)
    Johnny Cool (63)
    Beyond Desire (96)
    Personal Affair (53)

    Kidnapped (74)
    Schizo (76)
    The Iron Rose (73)
    Hot Target (85)
    Tracks of a Killer (96)

Since this is the second purge with no notice or warning in 2 weeks, my guess is that Netflix is doing this prior to removing transitioning to absolutely no expiration notice. The fact that many people have called and complained and they have no answers is troubling. Looking back, it's very depressing how unfriendly they have become over the last few years to the loyal consumers.

    ReplyDelete
  109. In the Custody of Strangers disappeared with no notice.

  110. About 95% of the TV Movies I had in my List disappeared over the past two days without warning. I know they were there Sunday because that was the last time I checked my list. On the new Netflix website, I can't even see expiration dates so the only way I can find them is to go to my Viewing History and then search from that page. My computer's metro app doesn't show expirations either. :(

Why they want to do away with expiration dates, is beyond my comprehension. At least Hulu put the expirations dates back in their new watchlist webpage and even put all the items soon to expiration at the top so one can see what's leaving after many (including me) complained about it.

Seems at least half of my missing TV movies are on Amazon Prime so I might see if my friend will let me use his account to watch them.
