July's Massive Housecleaning Continues

Just so no one thinks the number of movies expiring from Netflix this month represents business as usual, here's a tally of how many titles left the service each month since December of last year (as tracked by the enormously helpful site, New on Netflix USA):

December (2014) - 281 titles removed
January - 352
February - 224
March - 218
April - 307
May - 246
June - 212

That averages out to 307 departing titles per month, for the last six months. By comparison, July's total is (drum roll, please)...996. And counting. By the end of this month, given what we already know is set to expire, the toll will easily surpass 1,000.*

Making this number even worse is the fact that, as reported in my July 3 post (also picked up by many news outlets), the majority of these titles left with little to no warning—going against Netflix's historic practice of providing at least one week's notice prior to expiration.

That means you went to bed on the 19th with, say, 164 titles in your queue, and in the morning you woke up to find that 18 of them had disappeared. Poof—gone. Without any chance to reorder or prioritize based on Need To Watch. Thought you'd get a chance to bone up on some Mario Bava giallos or classic silents? Or one of those TV movies of the 1970s you were always curious about? Too bad. Netflix had other plans. And if reports of recent customer service calls are correct, the company plans to eliminate its expiration warnings altogether (because, why bother keeping your customers informed?).

Juliette Binoche in Code Unknown
Since that July 3 list of vanishing titles, hundreds more unexpected departures have been documented by this blog's shellshocked readers, the majority of them after the fact. For a full accounting of what's been unceremoniously dumped, you can scroll through the 100+ comments there—or take a look at New on Netflix USA's archive page. It's dispiriting, to say the least.

In the meantime, I want to officially recognize what I consider the most significant of these losses. Again, these are titles that left without any notice whatsoever, not the few (such as Dragnet, Manhunter, and Miami Vice) that Netflix deigned to alert us to. (Amazon Prime subscribers should be happy to know that many of these remain available on Prime, so you can try searching for them there.)

Totally eliminating notifications is a real bummer. I guess that others don't really let you know either.

But based on my discussions with other people, almost no one is watching movies on Netflix - they are looking for shows and for shows that they can "binge". On the other hand, I don't know how much value these movies have so why not put them out there.

David Speranza said...

Agreed that more and more people are using Netflix for TV (which is what the company seems to be redirecting itself towards), but there are still plenty of us who watch movies there.

Meanwhile, note that both Amazon Prime and Hulu give expiration notifications, with the former giving a full month's notice.

5 Broken Cameras had an expiration date for me.

will g said...

Yes Kirby, "Beyond the Walls" also had a posted expiration date, but by and large David's list is accurate.

I'm also wondering about "if reports of recent customer service calls are correct, the company plans to eliminate its expiration warnings altogether." My customer-service rep was completely oblivious to the fact that titles were disappearing with no warning, in fact she put me on hold for 10 minutes while she "investigated" and came back with no information whatsoever. Were others told they're changing to a no-warning policy? I can't remember if someone said that in the previous thread.

David Speranza said...

Thanks for catching those, @Kirby and @will g. Corrected.

In an attempt to try to get ahead of the N purge of titles, I visited the Kino Lorber website and made a short list of their silent films. The following Buster Keaton movies are still available tonight:

Sherlock Jr (1924) -- good fun
Seven Chances (1925)
Go West (1925)
The General (1926) -- watch this instead of Birth of a Nation

The following classic silent movies are also available:

The Birth of a Nation (1915) - dir. by D.W. Griffith
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) -- German Expressionist spooky
Nosferatu (1922) - dir. by F.W. Murnau Germany -- vampire
Battleship Potemkin (1925) - dir. by Sergei Eisenstein Russia -- revolution
Faust (1926) - dir. by F.W. Murnau Germany -- you know, with the devil
Metropolis (1927) - dir. by Fritz Lang Germany
---- 2 versions one with pop music, one original
Woman in the Moon (1929) - dir. by Fritz Lang Germany

This is all that is left of the Kino Lorber silent movie library on N. Catch them while you can, for tomorrow they may gone.
I'm printing a PDF file of the My List webpage on my computer every night to keep track of what's in my queue. Maybe you should, too.

Cannibal: The Musical was the second collaboration between Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park. (The first was a four-minute animated short.). Aside from any historical interest, this and the other Troma films look like they were acquired by Netflix as "filler" (sort of like the sawdust in a hot dog).

Regarding HULU:

While it's true that HULU posts expiration dates for some of their titles (often months or years in advance), I find they are just as unreliable as Netflix. Over the last few years I've seen quite a few of my queued items suddenly expire without any previous notice.

will g said...

I know it's slightly off-topic to talk about the actual CONTENT of the expiring movies, but I found this fascinating. I watched one of the 7/31 expirations, "Abduction of Eden," which I had never heard of before, and was quite impressed. David also links above to his very well-written positive review of this horrifying account of sex-trafficking, which we are told at the beginning of the movie is "based on a true story."

Here is a CNN interview with the woman whose "true story" the movie is based on.

http://www.cnn.com/videos/world/2013/10/15/ctw-cfp-chong-kim-eden-film.cnn/video/playlists/cfp-freedom-project/

And here is an article calling the woman a complete fraud who made the whole thing up!

http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/eden-was-a-scary-movie-about-sex-trafficking-based-on-a-true-storyandmdashor-was-it/Content?oid=21234470

As I said, fascinating. At any rate, it is a good movie.

Figures. Both IMDB and Wikipedia say that "The Longest Day" has subtitles to translate the extensive German & French dialogue, but what Netflix has does not have any such translation with it (except for like one random line near the beginning), no matter how I select my subtitle settings.

Pox Voldius said...

Correction: The first hour of "The Longest Day" on NF has translations for maybe 11 or 12 random lines of the French & German dialogue, which I doubt accounts for more than 5-10% of what needs translation. :p

@Pox Voldius

I spoke to customer service about it and the woman didn't seem to understand that I was talking about subtitles for the foreign language in the film, and not just separate subtitles for French and German viewers.

Hey, I know this has nothing to do with expiring titles, but I was wondering if some others could verify something I've noticed.

I watch Netflix almost exclusively on my PC, and over the last several years I've discovered that there are quite a few titles that are only available to watch in HD on a television...PC's will only allow standard definition viewing. It has to do with the contracts Netflix signs, and as a matter of fact they used to even put a disclaimer on a title's webpage such as "Viewable in HD on your TV". So I've gotten in the habit of only adding titles to my list that are available to watch in HD on my computer. But, sometimes that status changes.

For instance, when all the classic Disney titles came to Netflix in 2012 I added pretty much all of them because they were available to watch in HD on my PC. But I just checked yesterday and suddenly none of them are...they're only available in SD. Something changed - either the deal Netflix has with Disney or a technical error on Netflix's part.

I called customer service and they insist that there is no such thing as a title only playing in HD on a TV, but that's a load of bologna. They also insist that if a title plays in HD on a TV then it will also definitely play in HD on a computer. Again, bologna.

Can you all test this and verify that I know what I'm talking about? For instance, can you try Dumbo and other Disney titles and see of they play in HD on your PC? And see if they are in fact available on the TV in HD (as I suspect they still are)?

Kari said...

From Time to Time is now showing no expiration date in my queue- looks like it's been renewed!

Pox Voldius said...

@Mark L - I haven't been able to get anything on NF to play at all in Firefox on my computer.

I've tried updating the Silverlight, clearing the NF cookies using the link they provide, and making sure that Firefox is allowing NF to store cookies. The one thing on their help list that I haven't tried recently is disabling all of my add-ons, which I don't want to do, as I seem to recall that the last time I tried that for solving a problem it was a pain in the butt getting it back to how I wanted it afterward. Which is why I've given up on trying to watch NF in Firefox and only watch it in Chrome.

Apparently the reason the hidden menu doesn't work in Chrome any more, according to a Google search, is that recent versions of Chrome stopped supporting NPAPI plugins (which includes Silverlight & Java) for security reasons.

@Brian T. - Hey, Brian, you might have held off for another day or two before asking your questions. I'm sure most people here were pretty busy watching expiring movies the last two days of July. I watched 4 movies myself.

I checked Dumbo on my PC and it plays in Standard Definition. Unfortunately I don't have an HDTV just now to check if Dumbo plays in HD on TV. [I'm watching TV on my computer, too.] Maybe someone else can check that on their TV.

How do you tell now whether a title is available to stream in HD on a PC? Where does it say so? I checked a 2014 movie, The Two Faces of January, which is available to stream in HD on my computer when I play it. But I don't see anyplace on the movie description webpage where it states that it is available to stream in HD. Nothing in the Overview tab and nothing in the Details tab.

And if as you say you have discovered "quite a few titles" that are only available to watch in HD on television, can you give us some current examples so somebody else may check on them for you?

Instead of checking a negative [you know the Disney titles are SD now], how about we confirm a positive [that there are some titles only available in HD on TV]? Give us some examples.

@Mark L - Thanks for the Shift + Alt + LeftClick tip and the groovypost weblink.

@Pox - You should watch Netflix with Internet Explorer. I do and the hidden menu works.
You also do not have to pause the movie. Click while the movie plays and you get live A/V stats.
Check the system requirements here --> https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23742
Then check the links on how to install Silverlight and on that page the Microsoft Fix-It link.

@LarryG, glad you were able to try out the subtitle feature. Yes, you can add them on the fly, the reason I said pause first is so you don't miss any of the movie loading them.
