This bugs me.
Whenever you paused a movie for too long you would refresh your browser to pick up where you left off as the on screen instructions tell you. That was before the redesign.
Now, (even though it still tells you to do that) refresh kicks you back to the main screen. You either need to then reenter the movie title in the search bar or scroll down to find the category "Continue Watching" to find your movie. Netflix is a great example of the saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it".
Hey, @Mark L, do you mind copying this comment to my previous post, "What To Do About Netflix?"? It would be good to have all the interface gripes in one place (you know, just in case Netflix is looking). Thanks--

Also noticed today that a lot of stuff that is available on streaming only is not searchable on the DVD side of the website. I called Netflix to complain about their search last week or so. I was getting a lot of unrelated titles (The Blacklist was listed second on about 90% of my searches, even when I searched for Lilo and Stitch!) and the search was very particular--one misspelling and it wouldn't show what I was looking for. Not sure if this is a continuation of that problem or something else on Netflix's part.
@Nica I always search every title listed here from the DVD side to confirm the dates, and haven't noticed any steaming-only titles that weren't searchable. For example, "Wreckers" listed above by Kristina is streaming-only, and it comes up in search. I certainly hope that doesn't change, as that's the only way to see expiration dates more than a week in advance. As for the spelling sensitivity, I think it's always been like that.

Nica is definitely correct about certain streaming-only titles. Try searching for "Troll" from the DVD side of the website and you won't find anything, but it will come up on the streaming side.
Yes I see that Brian, and I didn't mean to sound like I was doubting Nica's word. It's just that, as I said, I haven't run across it yet for any of the expiring titles I've searched, and I have searched most of them. (Saying I've searched EVERY one is probably an exaggeration.)
Incidentally, "Troll" is expiring from Amazon Prime at the end of the month and I don't doubt it's also expiring from Netflix, but because I can't search for it from the DVD side there's no way to be sure.

on my last call to netflix last weekend, i raised that incomplete search results issue as well as the recent removal of the link on each streaming movie page to the dvd page for that title and the removed ability to add to the streaming queue from the dvd side of the site and repeated my assertion that filmographies for a clicked-on actor or director were incomplete depending on which side of the site one is on, which makes little business sense as it gives the false impression of content being unavailable to the customer either to stream or to rent as a disc. representative "nick the netflix expert" offered the opinion that this was all done to set apart the streaming and dvd services. i countered that it was very inconvenient for customers of both services of this one company to have to toggle back and forth between sides of the same site that were more unified before the recent redesign.
Just a thought after reading Travis' post:
I used to think very highly of Netflix customer service. Now not so much. I do appreciate the fact that every time I call I get to speak with someone in english, so at least there aren't any communication issues in that regard.
However, the representatives seem to be trained to assume that anyone calling the hotline doesn't know what they're talking about, and as a result they talk to me as if I'm a child. When I raise issues about known problems that we often discuss on this blog they put me on hold for long periods of time, only to come back and tell me that the problem doesn't actually exist. On a recent issue, I called three different representatives about something I'm 100% sure on, and not one of them would actually listen to what I was trying to tell them.
As of right now I will stay with Netflix because there isn't a better option (Amazon is good but still doesn't have as large a library), but I assure you if a worthy competitor came along I would definitely give them a try.

@ will g. Is the "Spiral" that is expiring on September 14 the French detective series, of which only the fourth season is streaming? And is "The Slap" the Australian series on which the U.S. Series is based? Between the IT Crowd, Spiral and The Slap, a lot of binge-watching in the next couple of weeks.
Spiral is one of the great detective stories produced anywhere. I was ticked off when Netflix removed Seasons 1 to 3, and I am unhappy about the removal of Season 4. (All four seasons are on Hulu, as is The Slap and all seasons of the IT Crowd plus an additional episode that followed the fourth season by several years and is not streaming on Netflix.). Season 5 of Spiral is going to stream on MHz Choice in the fall; hopefully Netflix will get the streaming rights to that Season.
Between the great July purge and the paucity of new titles released in July and August, I am trying to figure out where the $5 billion of commitments that. Netflix has on its books is going. I expect a big portion is going to Disney for its first non-theatrical rights to Disney (and Pixel, Marvel and Lucasfilm).content that is shown theatrically after December 31, 2015, which excludes the new Star Wars film which is being released in December 2015 and therefore goes to Starz. And even the new Disney films probably won't hit Netflix until the third quarter of 2016. So where's the beef--apart from the Adam Sandler "dogs" that Netflix has agreed to release? With Netflix going into new markets, you would think there would be a lot of good foreign content (films and TV) that they could license for Netflix U.S. At a relatively small cost as opposed to creating expensive French and Brazilian rip-offs of House of Cards.
@Brian. You are confusing Katy Perry: Part of Me with Katy Perry: The Prismatic Tour, which just started streaming. Only the former is leaving Netflix.
your results for searches probably will differ based on if you have your settings set to allow you to be a test user for new stuff.
I have noticed for a while that the results got very specific, before I could really misspell a lot and it would still find what I was looking for now I misspell one letter and it doesn't find anything.
I just started seeing the not in dvd but in streaming search now. This is stupid, everyone in the world told them they hated the idea of them splitting up the site and now they are doing it through code. What do we have to do forcefully overtake this company to get rid of the morons who are ruining this site.

I just heard that Columbia House has just gone bankrupt. When I got a VCR I joined CH and got a stack of tapes to last my lifetime. I did the same thing for my first CD player and DVD players. But Blockbuster (remember them) and rentals put paid to that business model. Netflix is trying to keep up in the changing communications environment and has clearly decided that there is no future in putting money into a vast storehouse of old films and TV shows for streaming. It's looking for different content. I won't be surprised to se Netflix streaming NFL games soon. Wellesley72, that's where the $5 billion is going.
"Beyblade: Metal Fusion" is FIRST on David's 8/31 list, and somehow I didn't see it? Sometimes I wonder about myself.

I neglected to post the year for the Tyler Perry movie, it's 2013. Also for the first time I checked the "I'm not a robot" box and went straight to Publish, bypassing the annoying picture captcha, what a thrill.

In reference to previous comments about the DVD search page, I also contacted their support about the same titles coming up in every search over and over (except I did it through Twitter, because I really don't want to waste time on the phone with those people), and it looks like they finally turned that feature off.
Also, they have very definitely removed streaming-only movies from the DVD search results. Instead they come up as a link in the upper right corner to go to the streaming page (which doesn't do you any good when the expiration dates don't show up on the streaming page -- so annoying!).
I also tweeted support about wanting expirations on the MyList page to show up further than just a week out. Maybe if we keep bugging them about that they'll actually listen.

If anyone (including David) needs convincing why this site's expiration posts are invaluable, as of right now New on Netflix USA hasn't listed a single movie that's expiring on 8/31. They only have some TV shows and cartoons.
Meg said (sorry I don't like to actually register for anything)... but here I am sort of anonymously, because I totally agree with Will G's 8.25, 11:48 AM, comment. There is nothing out there with current info on expiration dates. This was the only website I found that had actual, real, helpful information. I came across a lot of movies I had never heard of, would never have come across, and was able to watch, if not for this website and the comments left by people sharing what expiration dates they found. It is such a simple thing for Netflix to do, let it's customer have as much info as they can to make best decisions. Unfortunately, what I show on my list to expire is already included in the above comments, so I have nothing new to add.
To be fair Meg, New on Netflix is usually an excellent resource along with this site, many of the titles I post here come from there. But I find it totally mystifying that it STILL hasn't posted any 8/31 movie titles, this many hours after I posted that last comment. It's not like the proprietor is on vacation, he just posted this:

I also like New on Netflix although they sometimes post expiration dates on the actual expiration date. They also tend to post new releases late on the release date or, in some cases, several days after the release date. Nevertheless, they do eventually get around to posting expiration dates and they try to do so as far in advance of the expiration date as possible, which is more than Netflix does (at least if you are a streaming customer only).
As for Archangel, I believe that Lisa posted the expiration date on this page on August 10. Maybe the person at New on Netflix is being scrupulous in not copying from others. That's not a "dig" at this blog since I think you have a lot of people here getting information from a lot of different sources. I will repeat what I have said publicly before--this is the best site for getting early and accurate information on expiration since. Kudos to David and all other contributors.
Sorry I didn't see the previous "Archangel" listing, but my point was he added a new title to his site without adding any of the many movies expiring on 8/31. Since those expiration notices were posted on My List yesterday, "copying" is not an issue.

And I wouldn't be too hard on MaFt from New On Netflix. From what I can see online, he appears to be just one blogger, with a family, doing this on his own time. He's also based in the UK, which I'm sure makes for more hoops to jump through in searching for US expiration dates. I, for one, am impressed with how much he manages to keep up with.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I still see IT Crowd as expiring on September 1. Just looked seconds after reading that post from LinkLisa. Hopefully, she's right and it has been renewed and it's not showing on the DVD section of Netflix.
I know websites posted them a week or two in advance but it seems like since the new Netflix layout it is getting posted much later than normal. I am worried that a bunch of movies will expire from my list and I will not have a chance to watch all of them.
@seth Relax. If you have the streaming service, you will see 7 days advance notice of expiring movies on your MyList page. If you have the DVD plus streaming service, you should see 14 days advance notice of expiring movies on your MyList page. TV shows are given 30 days advance notice of expiration. So, you should know now by looking at your MyList page what's leaving by Thursday September 3.

Unless NF starts playing games with us again like they did with the silent films last month.

well a lot of the expiration dates don't show up a week in advance if at all. the only I see them is from your website or look at them by selecting the title on my game system. why would they appear first on my game system before on the actual website itself.

What you have to do is click on "Your Account" in the menu under the green square on the upper right of the Instant page. On your account page, scroll down to "My Profile" and click on "Order in My List." Then check the box that says "Manual Ordering." This will set up your queue in a list form and the 7-day notices will appear there under "Notes."

@will g @Brian T. - My mistake. I guess I got the wrong impression when reading earlier comments on the old Expiring Now webpages that are gone now. Maybe Brian Clarkson could post a comment again on the new WONN Talk page where it would be saved for future reference. I for one would like to know how in the world he does it, scooping expiration dates 2 weeks in advance, like he just did again this afternoon.
Happy (2011, documentary) no longer seems to have an expiration date.
This is somewhat off-topic, but recently I've started checking periodically on titles in my DVD queue for which "Expected Availability" has been "Very Long Wait" and noticed that some of the titles completely disappeared without any notice. In the past there would be a note above your queue telling you if titles are no longer available or have been moved to the "Saved Titles" graveyard. Not anymore I guess.

I just had 15 DVDs in my queue go from Very Long Wait to Unknown so they are still listing some of them.
Literally overnight in May 2014 I had nearly 100 titles in my DVD queue become Very Long Wait and several others become Short or Long Wait. It was alarming, and when I Google searched I found no one else talking about it except for one tweet. That was when I realized how many people have moved beyond a Netflix disc plan because that should have made huge waves. I called Netflix about it back then, and they had no explanation. I said they must have changed their algorithm, and they said they could go with that, but as I've learned and pointed out in my comments here recently, they aren't ones to shy away from shining me on.
Ever since that day in May last year I've put my Very Long Wait titles at the top of my queue because I know all too well that is the last stop before "Saved," and with Netflix and its customers seemingly being "over" DVDs, and alternatives for DVD rentals of older movies and shows essentially nonexistent, I have to act now if I want to see that content. I've been renting nothing but Very Long Wait titles in my disc plan for over a year. I figure I wanted to see these anyway even if they were in my queue for 10 years. A byproduct of this is if they do skip a bunch at the top to ship, say, the 10th or 20th title in the list, they often ship something closer to or at the top the next day or day after from a farther away shipping center, so I sometimes get more than I would on a typical week before the Very Long Wait saga began. On the other hand, and this may have more to do with the Post Office, the shipping time has become less predictable, with some titles shipped locally arriving a day or more after scheduled and titles shipped from out of town arriving sometimes several days past the predicted date.
I've missed only a handful of titles that have gone to Saved in the last year. I've noticed some I did rent have later gone on to be unavailable, so I've stuck to it. I did lose 6 titles to Saved this week, some of which I'd had in my top 10 for many months that never shipped. Last year I had some go to Saved only to come back so I always hope for that, but more likely they really aren't going to be available again. Brian T. was talking about a competitor coming along for Netflix streaming based on what we've all talked about here and the stupid changes Netflix insists on making. I want a competitor for Netflix discs for when they stop stocking and shipping them. Video stores are a bust, and buying everything that isn't streaming just isn't feasible or smart. I think Gamefly or some company like that also ships movies, but I can't imagine the selection is a fraction as good. I also know Redbox doesn't stock much past current releases. It's something I never understand why more people don't talk or seem to care about. They seem content to watch whatever is streaming.
@Travis: pretty much the same for me on the DVD side. Netflix is still making money on DVDs but they're not putting money into expansion. They're using their DVD profits to fund the "original" content they're making for streaming, which appears to be where they think their future lies. Another place to look for DVDs to borrow is your local library, especially if you want older, classic stuff and documentaries.

To the question about DVD expiration question.
The mylist does not change both show 7 days. The difference is when you do searches on dvd side it will show you around a month in advance if something is going to expire. Now it is not perfect because some get reordered or some get put on expiration during that month or even right before expiring. The new problem is that netflix split their site up and we can no longer see streaming only titles in the dvd search now. So now we have no warning about streaming only movies unless they are in our my list which is why i have started putting streaming only movies in my queue.
Yeah the DVD unexpected expiration really sucks. You are lucky last year one month all of the sudden 40 or 50 titles disappeared from my list and they were not even very long wait or at least most of them were not. Now I do the same thing put very long wait at the top of my list to hope to catch before they disappear. 5 titles just went to my saved queue this week and only 1 of them was very long wait.
I do will g I had to switch to that view to see them and the other view does not show all of my movies in my list. do you think any surprises will end up expiring at the last minutes. why has no website post5ed expirations except for you guys. thank you so much for telling us about expired movies it helps me a lot.
Seth, last-minute surprises are still relatively rare, thank God. But unless someone keeps 72 My List queues listing every one of Netflix's 36,000 titles, there's simply no way to know about everything that's expiring. Hopefully we're able to list most of them.
Again, this isn't the only website that posts expirations, New on Netflix USA does as well, though they dropped the ball this month.
I also subscribe to ClassicFlix, a great service to find many older titles (pre-1970 only), including films from Warner Archive and similar programs.

We hear from our members that you wish we had newer movies. So do we. Studio licensing practices means it often takes more than a year before consumers can watch a theatrically released movie when and how they want. it would have been nice to keep the Epix content until it had more original movies available. The Disney deal only covers theatrical releases after December 31 of this year. That means it will probably be at least six months before "new" Disney content hits Netflix. The Epix catalogue contains not only recent movies but also movies such as Flashdance and Dirty Dancing. It will be interesting to see how many movies expire on Netflix on October 1.
Epix content will remain on Amazon Prime, and it is likely that Hulu will start streaming Epix content on October 1. Hulu's movie collection does not have ads.

After reading Netflix's Epix dumping announcement today, I decided to go on Epix's website to see what movies would go missing from my queue. Turns out that almost every one of those TV movies that went missing last month from my list were Epix movies which goes to show they knew about this at least one month ago or more and didn't tell anyone until today. I guess they thought they'd remove some of the lesser watched movies first thinking no one would notice and then when the big ones were going to expire, they'd release a notice to let everyone know what was going on. Wish they could have done this a couple of months ago and I could have watched those TV movies I never got to see. Of course they'll show up on Hulu by October so maybe I'll get lucky and a couple of them might be free to see since they do have a few TV movies on there you can watch without a subscription. If not, most of them are on Amazon Prime, so I'll just ask my friend if I can watch them on his account.
Well now that I've checked the list on Epix's site, it looks like this is going to knock out at least 40 of the remaining titles on My List, including:

is every paramount movie leaving Netflix because of the epix deal going away. are sun of all fears clear and present danger and jack ryan leaving in September because I added them to my list and I have never watched them yet and I hope to before they go away.
Seth, "Sum of All Fears" and "Clear and Present Danger" aren't on the Epix site, so it seems Epix doesn't own the streaming rites to every Paramount movie, even though Paramount partly owns Epix.

I assume that Kill Bill 1 and 2 plus all Star Trek And Mission Impossible films will disappear from Netflix. Plus there are a lot of films from Epix that rotate in and out that won't be rotating in again. Reed Hastings had talked about dumping Epix back in 2012 but I think that Epix had an option to renew annually up until this year. It's ludicrous to think that Netflix's "original" films, which are art-house movies, movies that were passed over by major studios (like the Brad Pitt movie), and Adam Sandler movies, are going to replace the Epix catalog. The Disney deal only covers theatrical releases after December 31, 2015 (Starz gets the Star Wars sequel coming out in December) so it's not likely that we will see recent Disney movies until June 2016 at the very earliest. That leaves a nine-month gap to be covered by Beasts of No Nation, a Crouching Tiger sequel (with none of the original cast), Pee-wee Herman and...Adam Sandler?! Time to reconsider whether to keep my Netflix subscription.

oh great I guess a lot of the movies that I have added to my list that I never got around to watching are going to expire on me. I hope a good movie that I have wanted to watch does not leave before I get a chance to watch it. is this mostly new paramount movies or are some older ones going away as well.
