September's Departures: Of Epix Proportions

Take a final look at High Fidelity
[Updated 9/15: Many titles added, all forthcoming titles now linked. Big thanks to LarryG for compiling list from comments and providing links.]

That's right, August isn't even over—with a lot of great titles set to expire tonight at midnight—but there's enough going on to warrant an early look at September's upcoming losses.

The news continues to be bad for anyone who enjoys Netflix for its back catalog and older titles. The recent announcement of the company's decision not to renew its licensing agreement with Epix only affirms Netflix's reluctance to pay for content it doesn't exclusively own. That means more original shows and movies, fewer classic titles, and (in the long run) more Disney, Marvel, and Weinstein titles. The latter, the result of more recent contracts, isn't necessarily a bad thing—who doesn't like Disney and Marvel movies?—but for those of us who still go see such fare in theaters (quaint, I know), that's hardly the kind of content we crave for home viewing—where the older, more intimate, and more obscure can shine. And is there anyone besides Netflix content honcho Ted Sarandos who thinks striking a threefour-picture deal with Adam Sandler was a good idea? Ugh.

There's no denying this makes good long-term business sense for the company given the outrageous (and escalating) costs of studio licensing fees. But by the same token it represents another huge nail in the coffin of the Netflix I once cared about. Will I miss the latest Star Trek, Transformers, and Hunger Games movies? Not at all. But there are more than enough older, better, and more interesting Epix titles getting the axe (not to mention those yet to come) to make this a true cause for mourning. Combined with everything else that's been taking the fun out of Netflix lately, I've pretty much decided to cancel my subscription before the year is out—in fact, as soon as I finish streaming Breaking Bad, which I finally started watching this month (a latecomer as always).

Ironically, even before I heard the Epix titles were being picked up by Hulu (arriving on October 1), I was already planning on keeping that service for its Criterion films and recent TV shows. But now there's yet another reason. At least the movies there (unlike the TV shows) don't have ad breaks. And there's none of Netflix's awful pre-play. Or post-play. Or, worst of all: the looming threat of new Adam Sandler movies.

The cast of Undeclared says goodbye on 9/27
Below you'll find the most recent list of expiring titles as tallied from reader comments. I'll add and revise as necessary in the days ahead. The September 30 titles, especially, should be subject to change as we figure out exactly which Epix titles are going and staying. While it's currently assumed that all will be leaving, I like to think the newest titles—i.e., those added in the last few months—will get a temporary stay of execution, but I could be wrong. We'll see in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, you can take a look at this comprehensive list put together by the aptly named fantasticangel to see everything that's most likely on the chopping block.

I'd like to correct one thing I said in the previous thread. Going by an article on the Huffington Post, I said that "all James Bond, Rocky, Star Trek, Paranormal Activity, Beverly Hills Cop, and Friday the Thirteenth titles" would be casualties of Epix. Now I look at Epix's site and see that it doesn't contain a single Rocky, Beverly Hills Cop, or Friday the Thirteenth title (the last of which aren't on Instant anyway), and it only includes one Paranormal Activity title -- "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones." It does include many Star Trek titles. I haven't had time to go through the James Bond ones yet.

I hate Netflix losing so much content. Wish they would buy Hulu and raise rates a couple bucks a month instead. But since Epix movies are on Amazon Prime no big deal.

David Speranza said...

Yes, there's always Prime. But that's a site of a different color. ;-)

I agree that, if indeed thousands of titles are leaving, which seems to be the case, it's futile to try and list them all (even though I did just list a few, haha). Not to mention it's a ridiculous amount of work, for us and David. As I suggested to Seth in the previous thread, people can compare their My List queues with the Epix site and see which titles match up. If there WERE no Epix site for reference, it would be a different matter.

As the month wears on, maybe someone on some site will get ambitious and list them all. God bless them!

will g said...

Just an addendum to my previous comment. In saying a complete list is impractical, I didn't mean to suggest that none of the Epix titles be listed. Perhaps commenters should just list what they consider to be the most interesting/important titles they find, without it getting too unwieldy. There were a couple of good lists in the previous thread of titles people found from their queues. (I inadvertantly repeated two of those titles above.)

Sneaky. This afternoon it was still available. Tonight it shows as expiring once again.

Monarchy (U.K.) 2006 - 09/29/2015 last day to watch

Also, re. the other "significant shrinkage" issue (the other being Netflix's eroding base of classic & hard to find movies): Something that makes the auto-minimize of the screen before the picture actually finishes additionally annoying is that if you follow Netflix's "we know what's best for you" prompting and close the screen, Netflix will later list the Costanza shrunk flick as a movie to "continue watching" on the home page.

Just a quick question about the Epix disaster. Is it only movies that are affected of will there be also be television series leaving? I can handle the movies going away, but dread losing the TV series which are so hard to binge watch at the last minute, especially if there are multiple shows leaving or series with long season runs. Thanks.

will g said...

No Ed, no TV series are affected by the Epix disaster. The only series on a pay-TV service like Epix or HBO are originals, and Epix doesn't have any original series yet.

Many thanks to fantasticangel for searching through the Epix titles that start with A. I'm guessing the easiest way is to compare these lists, sorted alphabetically:
- Epix titles at http://www.epixhd.com/all-movies/
- Netflix USA streaming titles at http://www.allflicks.net/

A REQUEST/REMINDER:
David set up http://whatsonnetflixnow.blogspot.com/p/discussion.html for any comments that are not about specific expiring titles. Given the number of titles expiring this month, it would be great to take comments about Netflix policy, and which services carry titles that Netflix streaming will not, over to that page. Doing so will make the many titles on this page much easier to scan. Thanks!

Driving another nail into Netflix's coffin, Amazon announced today that you can update your iOS or Android app to download most Amazon content for viewing off-line. So when Netflix says you can watch its content anywhere, anytime, they really mean anywhere there is an Internet connection.

Wellesley72 said...

Just to clarify. That's most of the content in Amazon Prime, not just Amazon originals.

will g said...

@Linklisa That AllFlicks site is a reverse-chronological list according to date added. If it was sorted alphabetically it would be much easier to do a comparison, but I don't see an option for doing that. I'm also curious how fantasticangel was able to find a current list of "A" titles available on Instant. There isn't even a way to sort My List alphabetically. (Or is there?) Having to jump around on the Epix site is incredibly cumbersome and time-consuming. I'd welcome any helpful hints.

Anonymous said...

I'm going through the epix site alphabetically and searching netflix. It is a bit tedious and time consuming. I'm up to N, I'll post the completed list to my live journal when I'm done and post a comment here to let you guys know.

Linklisa said...

On http://www.allflicks.net/ I can sort on any column by clicking on the up/down arrows. So clicking to the right of "Title" at the top of the listings gives me an alphabetical list.

Wow how did you figure out how to do that Lisa? And fantasticangel, that's fantastic! I guess you're the ambitious person I was hoping for yesterday. Thank you!!!

David - A Star is Born is in the public domain so I don't think we'll lose that one.
Wikipedia has a list of all public domain films; Netflix has quite a few streaming...

jim said...

Should of added Night of the Living Dead, too...

David Speranza said...

I agree, @jim, that there are a number of public domain titles listed which will likely stick around. But until we get confirmations I'm inclined to leave them up, especially since I seem to recall Netflix losing some in the past. Thanks for pointing that out.

Sad to see you are planning to cancel, even though I've been having that thought myself more lately. I've been a lurker for quite a few months, and this blog has been a great resource for expiration dates and finding things I didn't even know Netflix was streaming.

Here are some titles from my list.

Last day to watch 9/15:
I Don't Know How She Does It (2011)

Last day to watch 9/27:
She Is Wow (2013) This is a Korean show.
The Big Wedding (2013)

Last day to watch 9/30:
Restaurant Impossible Collection

Ok, I finally finished the list of epix movies on Netflix. You can see them at my livejornal.
http://fantasticangel.livejournal.com/62542.html

I think I got them all and it's an extremely long list:(

David Speranza said...

Wow, great work--thanks from all of us. Now we just need to get confirmations on those in the coming days. In the meantime, maybe I should put that link up in the main post for easy reference? What do you think?

will g said...

I'm speechless. You really are a fantastic angel. Any idea how many titles there are FA? And yes David, you should certainly link to it in the post.

David Speranza said...

There are 613 (minus Better Than Chocolate, which is already gone). I've cleaned up the list and made corrections, and would be happy to send the file to you, @fantasticangel, if you want to replace what you have. I'm also working on my own "best of" version to post later.

Anonymous said...

I calculated that with this EPIX exodus, I'll be losing a quarter of the movies in my queue (70-80 titles), plus @10 documentaries. Awesome!

will g said...

613? Well, at least it isn't "thousands." Honestly, don't believe anything you read in the lamestream media.

Anonymous said...

David, you are welcome to post the link at the top if you like, and if there are corrections to be made just let me know. I went ahead and removed Better than chocolate.

David Speranza said...

Thanks, fantasticangel, will do. I did a lot of cleaning up--capitalizing, adding spaces before dates, etc.--and corrected a few of the dates as well. Email me at the address here and I can send you the revised text file.

Wellesley72 said...

While we are losing only (ONLY?) 613 titles, these are just the Epix titles currently streaming on Netflix. Since a number of titles rotate in and out periodically but wion't be rotating back in to Netflix viewers as of October 1, I think it is fair to say Netflix is losing the ability to stream probably 1500 to 2000 titles. As for the Netflix blog stating that these titles are available elsewhere, I guess that's true if you get Epix as a premium channel or subscribe to Amazon Prime or Hulu. For those Netflix viewers who don't have Prime or Hulu, is Netflix telling us to subscribe to one of those services? I view Netflix's decision to drop the Epix titles to be consumer-unfriendly, and the blog to be the height of arrogance. Deep down, I think the deal with Disney was so expensive, that they could not afford to keep Epix. I saw an article recently that the makers of "Beasts of No Nation" were floored by the amount of money Netflix paid for the film so I also wonder to what extent they are overpaying for original content. Both Beasts of No Nation and Brad Pitt's War Machine were offered to movie studios who took a pass on each.

Brian Clarkson said...

Sorry to hear that you're leaving the Netflix family, David. This Epix loss along with the giant streamageddon during the summer has shaken the most stalwart among us.

I'll stick through to the start of the new year in the hopes that maybe as part of the deal that Disney's back catalog will be made available. No guarantees, but that might restore some value. I think frankly that this is more about the "Exclusivity" clause than anything that led to its cancellation. I just hope they decide to look at getting some older titles to fill in the gaps between now and then.

I'll check through the DVD section of Netflix through that giant list in hopes that maybe some of those titles will stay. My feeling was that it was going to be a loss of maybe 200 titles or so. But 600? Sigh.

will g said...

The "cleaned up" version of The List looks great fantasticangel and David. Now to find some time to go through it all! I'm still amazed it exists.

Linklisa said...

Thanks again to fantasticangel for the list of Epix titles on Netflix. I've gone through and added those that rated high or interested me to my queue, and just doing that took hours, so I can hardly imagine the effort fantasticangel went through. Pretty overwhelming.

So to help save some time and keep some of us from missing a few dozen gems, I've shared a list ON THE DISCUSSION PAGE of the titles that Netflix rates high for me. Given the volume of titles overall, it would get very confusing if any of us started doing this on the page you're looking at now.

http://whatsonnetflixnow.blogspot.com/p/discussion.html is the discussion page where my high ratings list is posted. I hope others will also steer over there for discussions, so that we can keep this page on topic for listing NEW expiring titles that aren't already in David's post, the preceding comments, or fantasticangel's long list at http://fantasticangel.livejournal.com/62542.html

Linklisa said...

The link for WoNN TALK, in the menu bar at the top of the page, also goes to the discussion page.

David Speranza said...

Thanks, Lisa. Much appreciated. FWIW, I'll be slowly adding my own suggestions to the official list above (or possibly breaking out an Epix-only list, if warranted). Lots for us all to reflect on...

will g said...

@Linklisa I posted a question for you about your list on the other page.

ChapelHillNC said...

I just finished binge watching the fourth season of the French series Spiral, which was marked as expiring (last day, the 14th). Now it is no longer listed as expiring. By the way, the first three seasons are not streaming but, on the DVD side, the discs can be added to your "saved" queue. If enough people do this Netflix might get them.

Brian T. said...

From my various lists (containing 500+ titles), here are the movies that are leaving Netflix this month. As we all expected, the number is quite high (114 to be exact). I'm sure the bulk of these are Epix titles, but not entirely, so take a close look.

Yes, some of these have been posted before, but honestly I'm too exhausted at this point to cross check all of that. My source, as always, is the Netflix website, and dates are listed as they appear on that site.

And now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go cry at the futility of it all.

Holy crap, Brian T's list shows that it's not just Epix titles that are leaving en masse at the end of the month... and they just added Up in the Air too. Wow.

Anyway, for those who have Prime: be sure to check that all the Epix titles that are leaving Netflix are indeed also on Prime. Most are, but one of my titles (Irreversible) was not. Not sure why...

Also, there were several titles scheduled to leave Prime today but are now no longer leaving. Best thing to do is to keep an eye on your Prime watchlist to see if any Epix titles are going to cancel.

BTW as far as confirmation goes, as I said I haven't gotten that far in my DVD search, but at least through the C's fantasticangel's list is spot on. 10/1 is posted on all titles that are also available on DVD, except the one I listed. Streaming-only titles of course can't be confirmed until 9/25.

David Speranza said...

Thanks, guys. Brian, I'm sorting through your list now and will separate out the confirmed Epix titles and the new additions so that we can get a clearer picture of what's what. No matter what, it's not good news...

Brian also confirmed the expirations of 74 previously listed Epix titles, although I'm not sure it's worth breaking those out here since the general assumption is that anything from Epix is leaving.

Fantasticangel, I'll send you an updated list in case you want to replace your current one, which can continue to function as our Epix master list.

Thanks again, Brian, for all those additions and confirmations.

Anonymous said...

Thanks David, I posted the updated list.

Brian T. said...

By the way, I can confirm that Roman Holiday is NOT expiring. Therefore, it's probably safe to assume that at least some other Epix titles are staying with Netflix for the time being. Hence the need for confirming.

Wellesley72 said...

@CanandaiguaNY. The first three seasons of Spiral were on Netflix up until about a year ago (when they were taken off without notice. Those seasons, plus the fourth, are on Hulu. A new fifth season will be streaming this fall exclusively on a new streaming service called MHZ Choice.

will g said...

I went ahead and did a DVD search on all the 9/30 titles David has listed up top. Brian is correct about "Roman Holiday." Also not showing an expiration date is "Jade." The rest are good.

David Speranza said...

Given that today's only the 4th, I don't entirely trust any unconfirmed EPIX titles. We've already seen how easily Netflix can delete catalog titles without any warning. I'd say give them another week or so before declaring them safe.

Wellesley72 said...

I just noticed that Good Morning, Killer, which is streaming on Netflix and is included in fantasticangel's list of expiring Epix titles, is not currently streaming on Amazon Prime. I suspect this means that while the recent blockbusters are on Prime and will be on Hulu, some of the older releases must rotate will probably rotate on and off on different schedules.

I had assumed that City of God and Kinky Boots would disappear on 9/30 because they were Lionsgate or Paramount films but they don't show up as titles on Epix so Netflix is not losing all Lionsgate, MGM and Paramount titles, just a big hunk.

Wellesley72 said...

Also I had hoped that once the Disney deal kicked in, we might have access to the Indiana Jones and older Star Wars films. However, the Indiana Jones films show up in the Epix catalogue (they were Paramount films) and to my knowledge have never streamed on Netflix or Prime. The older Star Wars films were released by Fox. I have no idea whether they still have the rights to those films or whether they now belong to Disney. Maybe they just have the rights to future films, in which case I am not clear on what additional older Disney films Netflix is getting in 2015 that it doesn't already have.

Jordan said...

Good Morning, Killer is on Prime streaming. It just doesn't have a cover.

Giorgio Moroder Presents Metropolis 1984,1927 last day 9/14. Personally, I like the Metropolis Restored version better.

Than you Fantastic Angel for posting the Epix list, 641 titles as of today. I have imported it into a two column spread sheet so that it is sortable by year, but the year column is ugly with a ')' after each year.

Between Epix and other titles, over 25% of my list is disappearing at the end of the month, after over 30% in July. Some people had commented that the July purge was due to Kino, but I think that is may have been because of the cancelation of the Epix deal. At least some of those lost Kino titles are on Epix, observed from random hits searching my current list.

Some of the titles are currently on Hulu Plus, e.g. A Star is Born 1937, Marriage Italian Style 1964 and the mysteriouly disappeared The Bicycle Thief 1948 (not Epix).

Last day 9/18:
Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey 2012 R Netflix average rating: 3.3. (Netflix blurb: This documentary presents the musical saga of Arnel Pineda, who goes from singing in Manila nightclubs to fronting the legendary rock band Journey. Brought into the group just before a world tour, Arnel must sell himself to Journey's many fans.)

Sorry if this is a duplicate. I skimmed above and didn't see it. September looks to be a long and confusing month. At the rate we're going, there'll be 600 comments on this thread before David gets the October expirations page up.

The robot verification pictures are back.

will g said...

I just finished doing a DVD search of fantasticangel's list, looking for titles that are expiring earlier than 9/30. I found a grand total of THREE! I already posted one. The other two are:

9/24
The Good Guy (2010)

9/27
The Big Wedding (2013)

I also now have a queue devoted just to the streaming-only titles on the list, so I'll be able report if any of those are expiring earlier as the month goes on.

@fantasticangel Of course it's up to you if you want to bother making any changes to your list, but I made the following notes:

These titles are not currently showing an expiration date:

His Girl Friday
The Castle
The Warriors
Trekkies

And these titles are not currently streaming:

Evelyn
Fly Me to the Moon
Stag

I was able to find every title in your list on Netflix, but sometimes it took some investigating when a title didn't come up in search because of discrepancies in wording or spelling. Here's a list of those instances, where your title is followed by Netflix's title.

Hercules Vs Molloch / Hercules vs. Moloch
Hercules Vs The Hydra / Hercules vs. Hydra
Medusa Against the Son of Hercules / Son of Hercules vs. Medusa
New York in the 50's / New York in the Fifties
Operation Enduring Freedom: America Fights Back / Operation Enduring Freedom
P!nk: On The Road for The Truth About Love Tour / P!nk: The Truth About Love Tour
Sherlock Junior / Sherlock Jr.
The Birth of a Nation: Special Edition / The Birth of a Nation
The House On Garabaldi Street / The House On Garibaldi Street

Also, you have "The Longshot" dated 2002, it's 1986.

And that's it! I am more in awe than ever of the effort you put into compiling The List. Just doing a search of it was hard enough! But oddly I kind of enjoyed it once I got into a rhythm.

Anonymous said...

Okay, Will G. I made some changes on my list based off your last post.

The longshot actually says 2002 of Epix site so I put both dates. I noticed that movies were often off by a year but I don't know how one of the sites got so far off on the date for this one.

The 3 that aren't streaming, were streaming when I made the list but I marked them out and made a note. And made notes for the ones not showing expirations. And I added expirations to those expiring early.

will g said...

Yes fantasticangel I don't why Epix is so far off, but both Netflix and IMDb list 1986 as the year for "The Longshot." I wasn't sure if it was the same movie when I saw that, which is why I looked it up on IMDb.

will g said...

Oh and FA, I didn't mention it because it's already in David's list, but "Mud" is another Epix title expiring early, 9/20.

@CanandaiguaNY You can still bypass the picture verification by just not checking the "I'm not a robot" box.

Wellesley72 said...

Sorry to hear that Tomorrow When the War Began was renewed. I watched it a couple of days ago--a terrible Australian ripoff of Red Dawn. I also decided to watch an episode of Undeclared before it expired. A great show! Binge-watched the first five of 17 episodes yesterday and will definitely watch the rest.

AK said...

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is not showing an expiration date on the Netflix DVD site.

will g said...

@AK You are correct about that, it must have changed in the last couple of days. (Unless I just made a mistake, impossible!) That's another one fantasticangel can delete.

Anonymous said...

I would delete the ones that aren't showing expiring but I don't trust Netflix not to get rid of them anyway. That's why I just added a note. Thanks for all the updates on the list guys. It's very helpful.

LarryG said...

@fantasticangel -- Please make the following updates to your Epix list.
What an incredible job you have done. Thank you.

Add two Epix titles found by Anonymous on Sept 4
A Fond Kiss (2004)
A Good Day to Die (2010)

Change the second duplicate listing of
Road To The NHL Winter Classic (2014)
to Road to the NHL Stadium Series (2015)

Remove Epix title not streaming on Netflix at this time
Blood Money (aka Fist of The Warrior) (2009) is not the same movie as
Blood Money (2012) which is streaming on N
-- I confirmed both movies have different directors and cast at IMDb

Change Epix movie date
Windwalker (2002) -- should be (1980) per Netflix
-- I confirmed director and cast at IMDb -- year of release is (1980)

Jordan said...

Maybe we will have to keep an eye out for new streaming Epix releases. For instance, Dear White People just went on streaming and will probably get pulled at the end of the month. That sounds like something Netflix would do...

Wellesley72 said...

@Jordan. I think the only other new Epix title that may come to Netflix in September is Men, Women & Children since it shows up as a new release on Amazon Prime this month. For some reason, Netflix has never shown any inclination to mention new Epix titles in their monthly listings of releases, maybe because Amazon does.

will g said...

Yes "Dear White People" was added on 9/4. "Men, Women & Children" is being added on 9/12 but I might as well list it now.

9/30
Dear White People (2014)
Men, Women & Children (2014)

Thanks Jordan and Wellesley for pointing those out.

will g said...

(I know fantasticangel will add those titles to the list, but I think it would be helpful to list all new Epix titles here too.)

Why are they even still adding Epix movies? It seems like a waste to get them and then have to give them up in a couple of weeks.

Linda G said...

Men, Women and Children is now showing as expiring 9/11 and Dear White People on 9/30.

will g said...

@Linda G Not sure what you're looking at, the site says "Streaming - Available 9/12/2015" for MW&C. You're correct about DWP.

So I checked all the new releases listed on this site and found two more:

Until 10/1
Area 51 (2015)
Private Parts (1997)

The strange thing is Area 51 is expiring on Amazon Prime at the end of the month too! I also found 8 other movies which are already in the 600+ Epix list. That makes 10 new arrivals appearing and leaving in the same month!

I now see that my New on Netflix USA list from yesterday had repeats, I really have to be more careful. Here's today's, I THINK it's new...

9/15

Joyride (1997) - Tobey Maguire, Amy Hathaway

You previously listed Joyride (1977) - Desi Arnaz Jr., Melanie Griffith

Remove two films which expired 8/31 per David's August Expirations post
Evelyn (2002)
Fly Me to the Moon (2009)

Remove Epix title not streaming on Netflix at this time
Stag (1997) is not the same movie as
Stag (2013) which is streaming on N

Some of you may want to check out my latest Amazon Prime post to see the (re)appearance of a bunch of past Netflix titles--many, I think, from July's surprise purge. Not sure which (if any) hail from Epix--at this point I'm lucky I can keep them all straight--but it's an impressive list.

My queue that was full at 500 titles is now at 496, I have no idea what disappeared.

Anonymous said...

if they really cared about their customers those 4 titles would have gone into a saved queue like the DVDs so at least you can tell what you lost.
But they don't care about us at all. They already showed with EPIX that they don't care, they expect you to own memberships with all the streaming services and they are not going to bother to make sure they are the one stop shop.

Anonymous said...

will g, have you checked http://usa.newonnetflix.info/ ? You might spot your missing titles there.

will g said...

Yes Anonymous, I check there every day and post that site's titles here. My missing titles did not have announced expiration dates, that was my point. Four titles disappeared overnight with no warning. Here are today's titles from New on Netflix USA:

9/18
American Warships (2012)
Blue Collar Hooligan (2012)
Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey (2012)

idk if you guys get the movie channels from your cable provider or not but i receive all the movie channels and apps that come with them including: hbo go, max, showtime, starz, encore, movieplex, and if charter spectrum is your provider you can get epix included in there too at no additional charge, im not too worried about the titles leaving cuz at least i can watch them on the epix app but epix is another place where they dont tell u when things leave... they have a recommended watchlist that says titles leaving soon and it only shows 9 of the epix, no pun intended, movies that are leaving. i emailed support and they said thats just a summary of the best leaving and there is no way to find out when it expires or not. for how much we pay to legally stream movies every month and are being good people supporting the industry and not just pirating at a coffee shop like everybody else i think the least they could do is tell us how long we have to watch a damn movie i dont think its bad press at all to say hey this is a list of titles leaving soon.. its a part of business licenses expire.. people are more outraged at the fact that movies randomly disappear then of them actually leaving.. pretty soon i dont even think they will give us a weeks notice. whoever is in charge of this department at netflix should be fired. its a shame netflix was the best and they tried to fix something that wasnt even broken.. thats how they became the best household movie streaming name.

will g said...

@Anonymous Netflix could certainly do a better job by posting expiration dates on the Instant pages, but at least they're still showing up in DVD search weeks ahead of time, and MOST of the time they do post a 7-day warning in the queue, something David and others feared was being discontinued. Until all of that stops I'm not going to call for anyone to be fired LOL.

Jordan said...

But I think only people who are getting DVDs can see the expiration dates. Everyone else has to go on their Netflix app on their phones and check each movie in their list one by one.

Anonymous said...

I can tel you the dvd warning is going away soon too as I have seen more and more movies in the dvd search being split between dvd and streaming. A lot of the 2015 new movies are being separated out with 1 for dvd and 1 for streaming so we can't see the warning ahead of time. They are doing what we specifically told them we didn't want which was creating 2 different sites.

jim said...

Until 9-19 -
The Woman Chaser

I'm showing Rambo and Hannie Caulder as Epix titles. I gather they'll be expiring, too.

will g said...

@jim I don't see either of those titles on the Epix site. And neither is showing an expiration date in DVD search.

9/19
Beyond the Ocean (2000)
Hot House (2006)
Reporter (2009)
The Talent Given Us (2004)
The Woman Chaser (1999)

(I THINK "Reporter" is already listed but I couldn't find it.)

(And David, if you're wondering why I keep deleting comments, it's because of that damned white space.)

will g said...

LOL yes Jim just listed "The Woman Chaser." I'm not blind, just sleepy.

jim said...

Will - They show up for me on the Epix site; they just don't show as "watch now" titles. I'm erring on the side of caution and assuming that everything that Netflix has that is on the Epix site is leaving...

will g said...

Jim could you please tell me how to access the titles that aren't "watch now" on Epix? This is the same problem I had with the Friday the 13th titles, I can't find the ones that aren't currently streaming on the site.

LarryG said...

@will g -- How strange. You are the one who shared the website address
with all of us, I think. It is http://www.epixhd.com/all-movies/
What device are you searching on? I use my Windows PC and can see them.
I searched for Rambo in the Search Field box in the upper right hand corner
and the title First Blood turns up. Hannie Caulder turns up on search, too.
will, are you clicking on the letters at the top of the website instead
of typing the title into the Search box? That could be your mistake.

will g said...

@LarryG I thought there was a way to view all the non-streaming titles on Epix without searching individual titles. Anyway, the search function isn't working on the site for me. The search icon isn't clickable. I'm also using a Windows PC.

LarryG said...

@will g -- I guess I'm old-fashioned. I type the title and press the ENTER key to start the search. I never thought to click on the Search icon on the website. You're right the Search icon doesn't work on the starting website page. But once you get your first Search Results page, then the Search icon does work on those pages. Or you can press the ENTER key again.

will g said...

Thanks Larry, I thought I had also pressed enter but it worked this time.

Now I'll repeat what I said earlier to Jim, the two titles he mentioned are not showing an expiration date in DVD search. I see no reason a date wouldn't be posted, as with all other Epix titles, if they're expiring. Perhaps they don't own the streaming rights to the titles not currently streaming on the site, and Netflix gets the rights elsewhere?

Brian Clarkson said...

Not seeing a date for expiration for the Rambos or Hannie Caulder there either.

For those wondering, I do subscribe to the DVD service and see the expiration dates that way. I also have Roku's Instant Watch Browser which allows me to see which titles on my queue are expiring, although I like to double check using the DVD section.

I also search under various actors/directors as well as certain studios that I'm aware have deals with Netflix (the latter can be found in Netflix's Wikipedia page). It's helped me find some titles leaving and coming soon. Hope that helps.

Yes Alchemar, I believe if a so-called "Epix movie" isn't streaming on its site, it means they don't currently own the streaming rights, and therefore Netflix isn't licensing it from them.

I know LarryG will be frustrated that Anonymous didn't weed out the Epix titles in his/her list. Maybe that's a lost cause? Just in case anyone still doesn't know, here is fantasticangel's complete list of all Epix titles expiring this month:

After looking at David's master list and all of the comments, I posted 26 titles above, and got snarked at by LarryG, as if my list, and other posted expirations, is what's extending this list of comments.

will g said...

@CanandaiguaNY Thanks for the explanation. Anonymous said they were appearing in "my queue," so I thought that meant My List. Us lowly online users have to wait six more days for the 9/30 notifications.

Seth mishne said...

my ps3 shows the expired movies at least 2 to 3 weeks before they even appear on the website. why do you think that is case. if they show up on the ps3 app they should show up on website.

Jordan said...

I went through Anonymous's "Massacre" and found 5 movies that haven't been listed yet.

Until 10/01
Bella (2006)
Bound (1996)
The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete (2013)
Till Human Voices Wake Up (2002)
Whispers in the Dark (1992)

will g said...

@Jordan That's accurate, except for "The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete," which is on the Epix list. You might not have seen it because all titles starting with "The" are listed under "T" -- which is the way Epix does it, stupidly in my opinion. (Not a criticism of fantasticangel.)

Achernar said...

will g,

Yes, the Netflix TV apps on my TV and Blu-ray player (both Sony, but different versions of the app) give 14 days notice on both movies and shows (when notice is actually given). From other postings, that seems to be generally true for other versions of the TV app. I don't know what the app on my Android tablet does.

As to why it is different than the website (or why having DVDs makes a difference), Netflix only knows.

Also, I didn't make it clear, but the seven remaining silents are as of 10/1.

Jordan said...

Thanks, I did notice that the "The" titles were in the T's but I must have missed that one. I usually just use "Find" to see if a title is on a page then I don't have to worry about how people list the titles. Maybe I just wanted to spell "Inevitable" correctly.

David Speranza said...

And here's another little tidbit: When you look at the description page of a title using the Roku player, it lists the Oct 1 (Sept 30) expiration date at the bottom. (Better look quickly, though, before the dreaded pre-play starts.) This means we can include Roku along with Playstation and Blu-ray players as a TV app that provides an expiration date two weeks in advance. Not that it's especially user-friendly.

David Speranza said...

P.S. I've been culling the comments a bit--removing lists that have been incorporated at the top--to try and keep things from carrying over onto a second page (which I didn't realize could happen). Will do my best to make sure nothing crucial slips between the cracks.

Anonymous said...

will g - not feeling criticized. Believe me, nobody thought Epix was stupider than me when I got to the T's thinking I was nearly through with my list and realizing I basically had to go through the whole alphabet again.

will g said...

@Jordan Thanks very much for those. I'd just note, for those without DVD search, that you posted Netflix's dates, not the last-day-to-watch dates that David uses here. So the first one is 9/27, etc.

will g said...

9/25
Inseparable (2011)

10/19
DTLA (2012)

Jordan said...

Yeah, I kind hate the way Netflix phrases it because "until 9/27" could mean it expires before that day or on that day. I guess I could just phrase it "Last day 9/26" from now on to clear it up.

Jordan said...

Let's try that again. "I kind of hate the way..."

Last day 9/28
Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer (2003)

will g said...

Jordan there's really no need to say "last day." If you just post the correct date (one day earlier than Netflix's date) it's understood.

ChapelHillNC said...

As to why many devices show expiration dates earlier than when Netflix puts them up on its own sites, I suspect, on no evidence, that the device makers (Sony, Vizio, Apple, etc.) have told Netflix "we'll factory-load your app on our device but only if you give two weeks notice of expirations." That's the only explanation that makes sense to me. Left to itself, Netflix would probably gve no notice at all.

Pox Voldius said...

@CanandaiguaNY - It really wouldn't surprise me if that were the case. Pepsi actually agreed to having a slot for Coke in the Pepsi-brand vending machines at my workplace because that was the only way they could get their foot in the door here. ;)

All of those titles are on fantasticangel's list except for Timestalkers.

Lisa, I can repost but since I am technology-challenged, I will probably have to retype the entire post which I won't be able to do until late tomorrow or on Thursday. in the meantime, let me see if I can find someone with more expertise to see if there is a simpler way to post your comments to this blog.

David Speranza said...

Reposting Linklisa's lost comment:

Things are always bound to get a little crazy towards the end of the month, with many of us trying to squeeze in as many movies as we have time to watch before they're gone. Like many of you, I wish I had more information than Netflix gives us. Fiddling with my own queues, and trying to keep up with expirations listed here, gives me some illusion of control. Everybody posting here is a volunteer, and not everyone has gotten used to the conventions here. I, for one, am grateful for all the contributions, and I hope we can get through the massive expirations this month with patience and kindness towards each other.

Please bear this in mind, as we're all bound to see a lot more dates on our own "My List" pages when 9/30 and 10/1 are a week or less away. Some suggestions, and some reiterations:

-- SORT your titles into alphabetical order. This makes it much easier for others to check whether your titles are new compared to what they're already tracking. (Some expected variation: "The" may end up in the T's, depending on what you sort with.)

-- YEAR -- Include the *year* as well as the title in your listings, if you can. This helps in distinguishing duplicate titles. As the year doesn't show up in your Netflix queue, you may need to look up title details to find it. This may not seem like a big deal, but it really helps when there are a lot of titles expiring as there are this month.

-- CHECK against titles that have already been submitted. Usually this just means doing a search against what is on this month's page, where you're commenting. For the end of September 2015, there is also a long list of expiring titles distributed by Epix. @Fantasticangel has shared 600+ of these titles at http://fantasticangel.livejournal.com/62542.html Because so many of us are tracking hundreds of titles, it is a great kindness to everyone here to check that list as well as this page before posting. (And of course there will be some human error. Take a breath when it happens.)

-- DATES -- *Subtract* one day from what Netflix lists as the expiration. If Netflix says 10/1, that's the day it is *gone*. Here we list the last day it is *available*, which would be 9/30. As far as I know, you can watch the remaining time of a title on the date Netflix lists, only if you've started it before midnight the day before, and not paused it for more than about 15 minutes. (People here will generally assume that the dates you list have one day subtracted from Netflix, so it helps if you can learn to shift the dates.)

-- SPELL the titles exactly as Netflix does, so others can find them when searching.

-- DISCUSSIONS, comments (on anything but how we list titles), complaints and questions are better taken to the discussion page, at http://whatsonnetflixnow.blogspot.com/p/discussion.html and shown as "WoNN TALK" in the menu bar. This makes it much easier to scan through titles on this page.

Many thanks to all the contributors here. None of us have control over what Netflix is doing, and that will be especially frustrating as the Epix titles disappear in the next several days. Let's extend each other all the kindness and courtesy we can. Keep breathing, and enjoy whatever you watch.

Oh and thanks for the comment Lisa. David, assuming these expiration threads continue (please!), perhaps it would be a good idea for you to briefly state those guidelines yourself in each post. Especially when it comes to the dates, I think it would be helpful. New people will always post Netflix's dates unless otherwise instructed.
